Laser Hair Removal Salt Lake City

April 21st, 2010 admin

Why Laser Hair Removal?

Men and women struggle with the common problem of unwanted body and facial hair.   Waxing, tweezing, and shaving are time consuming and must be repeated over and over again. Until recently, electrolysis was the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. Electrolysis is extremely painful, every hair must be treated separately, and large areas are not practical to treat using electrolysis. Laser has the same FDA approval for hair removal as electrolysis. Laser is the fast and easy solution to unwanted hair.

How does it work?

The pigment in the hair follicle selectively absorbs the laser light, and converts it into heat. The heat cauterizes the nutrient vessel, which disables the follicle from producing hair.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Our laser is specifically designed to target the pigmented hair follicle while leaving the surrounding skin structures unharmed.

Does It Hurt?

The laser feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most people say it is uncomfortable, but not painful. Topical anesthetic creams are available, however few choose to use them. Most laser clinics will let potential clients have a “test pulse” to alleviate the fear of pain.

How Long Will It Take?

The procedure takes 1 minute for a lip and up to an hour for a man’s back. Procedures are done 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Why Does It Take Multiple Treatments?

Hair grows in cycles. The treatment is only effective on hairs that are in the anagen cycle of growth. On average 20% to 30% of the hair you see currently is in the anagen stage. We recommend 4 treatments, some will be happy with fewer and others may require more.

How Does The Area Look After The Treatment?

Immediately after treatment it may be pink or red, resembling sunburn: this usually disappears within an hour. The skin is soft and smooth after treatment.

How Much Does It Cost?

The per treatment price is higher for laser than other forms of hair removal, however laser is more economical over the long term. It will save you money considering you won’t have to spend money continuously on other methods of removal.

Are Some Lasers Better Than Others?

Yes. It is important that the laser is new, because older lasers were not as selective in targeting the follicle. Alexandrite lasers are the best type of laser for hair removal. Candela makes the only Alexandrite laser with DCD (the GentleLASE plus), making it the most effective laser today for hair removal. The DCD is a patented cooling device that sprays cryogen onto the skin before each laser pulse minimizing discomfort and maximizing efficacy.

Laser Hair Removal Information

We utilize the Candela Gentlelase laser.  This is an alexandrite laser with a wavelength of  755nm which is selectively absorbed by melanin pigment.  The Gentlelase utilizes a patented cooling spray of cryogen gas which cools and protects the skin, helping to reduce discomfort.  The Gentlelase has the largest treatment spot size of any hair removal laser available, allowing for rapid treatment times.

Laser hair removal works by an indirect process:  the pulse of laser light is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair and heats the hair shaft.  If the hair is heated sufficiently, it permanently damages the hair follicle, resulting in no further hair growth.  Because the laser light must be absorbed into pigment in order to create heat, laser hair removal will not work on blonde or gray hair.  Likewise, it is difficult to obtain effective results on darker skin types because the skin absorbs more of the laser energy, necessitating use of lower energy settings.  Laser works best on people with dark hair and light skin.  Lesser degrees of effectiveness and permanence will be obtained on people with either lighter hair color or darker skin.  However, even if the hair removal is not permanent, laser is still the best way to remove hair since it reduces or eliminates folliculitis or “razor bumps.”  Hair that regrows tends to be finer and follicle size is smaller, resulting in smoother, cleaner-looking skin even if shaving is still necessary.

Because a hair must be present in a follicle in order for laser hair removal to work, tweezing or waxing prior to a laser treatment is not recommended.  And since hair grows in cycles, not all follicles will have a hair attached to the base of the follicle where it must be in order to permanently disable the follicle.  Consequently, multiple treatments are necessary in order to catch follicles at the right growth stage.  At least four treatments are required and commonly, six or more are needed to permanently eliminate hair.
