Dysport is made by the company Medicis, which is also the makers of Perlane and Restylane—there hyaluronic injectable filler.  Dypsort is an acetylcholine released inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent that is injected by a trained doctor into the muscle around the eyes, glabella and forehead.   The active substance is a botulinum neurotoxin type A complex that acts at the level of the neuromuscular junction in the targeted muscle.  Dysport is a neuromuscular blocking toxin that works by blocking the acetylcholine release at the motor nerve ends and reduces muscular spasms.  You are still able to move and make expressions; you just won’t have the wrinkles show when you do. It works very similar to the other popular neurotoxin, Botox.

It takes 2-4 days to take full effect after the initial injections and tends to last around four months, but sometimes shorter or longer just depending on the patient.  After several treatments of using Dysport, it will gradually last longer.  It is also considered a preventive treatment for wrinkles in the treated areas.  Because of the four months without strong movement, the muscles will become less pronounced.  It has been used in 27 counties for cosmetic purposes.  Dysport was recently FDA approved in the United States and released mid July 2009 for medical office use.

Patients should not use Dysport if they are pregnant or breast feeding.  The most common side effect would include the product spreading from the area injected, which can cause a temporarily drooping of the eyelids.  Immediate medical attention is required if it cases difficulties with respiratory, speech or swallowing.
